What is FunOS?

FunOS is a lightweight, minimal, and highly efficient GNU/Linux distribution crafted for performance and simplicity. By prioritizing essential functionality and stripping away unnecessary bloat, FunOS delivers a remarkably fast and responsive desktop experience.

Here is a quick overview of what makes FunOS unique:

Core Foundation

  • Ubuntu-Based (LTS & Interim): FunOS offers both the Long-Term Support (LTS) and Interim releases of Ubuntu, giving you the choice between rock-solid stability and the latest software updates.
  • HWE Kernel: Powered by the Ubuntu Hardware Enablement (HWE) kernel to ensure excellent out-of-the-box compatibility with both new and old hardware.
  • Snap-Free Experience: FunOS is purposely built without Snap, resulting in faster application launch times, lower disk usage, and traditional package management.

Desktop Environment

  • JWM Window Manager: At its core is JWM (Joe’s Window Manager), offering a highly customizable and incredibly lightweight desktop interface.
  • LightDM & Xorg: Utilizing the reliable LightDM display manager and the proven Xorg display server for broad compatibility and smooth rendering.
  • Curated Essentials: Out of the box, FunOS includes only the essential daily driver applications—a file manager, text editor, terminal, media players, web browser, and document viewer—keeping the system clean and bloat-free.

  • Ultra-Lightweight: Consumes only around 350-400 MB of RAM when idle (measured via htop or lxtask), breathing new life into older machines while flying on modern hardware. (Note: Tools like free -h or btop++ may report around 600 MB due to differing memory calculation methods).
  • Compact Footprint: The complete installation image (ISO) is sized at around 2.0 – 2.1 GB, making it fast to download and deploy.
  • 64-bit Architecture: Optimized specifically for modern 64-bit (amd64) desktop PCs and laptops.
