Release Date: April 24, 2026
Base: Ubuntu 26.04 LTS (Resolute Raccoon)

Introduction

The FunOS team is proud to announce the release of FunOS 26.04 LTS, a Long Term Support version built on top of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS.

This release represents a major milestone for FunOS, bringing significant improvements in security, system reliability, and modern Linux technologies. With the adoption of Rust-based system components and a new initramfs system, FunOS takes a strong step toward a safer and more future-proof operating system.

What’s New in FunOS 26.04 LTS

1. Based on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS (Resolute Raccoon)

FunOS 26.04 LTS is built on the solid foundation of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, ensuring:

  • Long-term stability
  • Access to the latest packages
  • Improved hardware compatibility

2. Linux Kernel 7.0

This release ships with the Linux Kernel 7.0, providing:

  • Better support for modern hardware
  • Performance improvements
  • Enhanced system responsiveness

3. Rust-Based System Components

FunOS 26.04 introduces Rust-powered core components, marking a major improvement in system security and reliability.

What’s changed?

  • sudo-rs replaces traditional sudo
The classic sudo implementation (written in C) is now replaced with a Rust-based alternative for improved memory safety.
  • rust-coreutils replaces GNU coreutils (partially/fully)
    Core utilities such as:
    • ls
    • cp
    • mv
      are now provided by rust-coreutils

Why this matters

Rust-based tools help:

  • Reduce memory-related vulnerabilities
  • Improve system stability
  • Align FunOS with modern secure computing practices

This is one of the most important technical upgrades in this release.

4. Dracut as Default Initramfs Generator

FunOS 26.04 now uses Dracut instead of the traditional initramfs tools.

Advantages of Dracut:

  • More modular and flexible
  • Better integration with modern Linux systems
  • Improved boot reliability

This change aligns FunOS with newer upstream trends in Linux distributions.

5. New Splash Screen

FunOS now includes a new boot splash screen, based on the BGRT/Spinner Plymouth theme from Ubuntu 26.04.

This provides:

  • A cleaner and more modern boot experience
  • Better visual integration with modern firmware (UEFI systems)

6. New Wallpapers

This release comes with a set of new default wallpapers, giving the desktop a refreshed and modern look.

7. Calamares Installer

FunOS 26.04 uses the Calamares installer, offering:

  • A simple and user-friendly installation process
  • Fast and reliable system setup
  • Better flexibility for customization

Support Lifespan

FunOS 26.04 LTS will receive:

  • Standard support until April 2031

This makes it suitable for:

  • Daily use
  • Production environments
  • Long-term deployments

    1. Sebenarnya saya lebih menyarankan untuk fresh install gan. Tapi besok insya Allah saya siapkan artikel untuk panduan upgradenya.

  1. Unfortunately ubuntu 26.04 has increased the need for RAM. Despite the lightness of Funos the Ram consumption has gone from 250-300M to over 400M! For old PCs it is a problem… can something be done to decrease it? Thank you

    1. Hi Simone,

Thank you for your feedback and for trying FunOS 26.04 — I really appreciate it.

You’re absolutely right. Since FunOS 26.04 is based on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, some increase in RAM usage is expected due to newer system components, updated libraries, and changes in the base system. Even though FunOS keeps things lightweight (for example by using JWM), it still inherits part of that overhead.

I’m also exploring possible improvements for future releases to keep memory usage as low as possible without sacrificing stability and compatibility.

For older PCs with very limited RAM, using an earlier FunOS release (such as the 24.04 series) may still provide a better experience.

Thanks again for your input — feedback like yours is very helpful for improving FunOS.

      Best regards,
      Bustami

    2. I’m using FunOS with a non-default config with sway (Wayland). For me the memory usage went DOWN from 383M on 25.10 to 353M on 26.04. running sway and foot terminal.
